About Valerie Rose

Valerie Rose is a fiddler, singer, choir director, choral arranger, and dance musician based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She leads the Valerie Rose Irish Band, performs with Pigs in the Rigging, and is the newest member of Wake the Dead, the World’s Only Celtic Grateful Dead Jam Band.

Valerie maintains a private teaching studio in violin, fiddle, viola, piano, and guitar and has taught at various West-Coast music camps. She conducts Palo Alto’s M’Earthtones choir, and leads the Rose Tree Youth Ceili Band, and runs a popular Irish session at Redwood City’s Alhambra Irish House.

Meet WAKE THE DEAD — the World’s Only Celtic All-Star Grateful Dead Jam Band. Since 2000, this hot Northern California septet has been blending Celtic traditional music and the songs of the Grateful Dead—at first impressing the Dead themselves enough for them to release the début CD on Grateful Dead/Arista Records.

Now, ever more inventive and ever more energetic, WAKE THE DEAD spreads their reach to embrace the entire Summer of Love, keeping it alive for Deadheads and Celtoids alike as only they can.

Pigs in the Rigging

Pigs in the Rigging delivers a full-throttle taste of Ireland with their driving jigs and reels, sea shanties, and ballads. Their high-energy sound is propelled by Chris Dillingham on drums, Randy Fish on guitar, and Jason Courtney on Irish bouzouki. Flying on top are the fiery double fiddles of Valerie Rose and Philip Batchelder, with Chris weaving in whistle and concertina.

They’re a fixture of the Bay Area Irish set dancing and contra dance scene, but they’re just as at home playing a straight concert. Every St. Patrick’s Day, they pack Berkeley’s Starry Plough for a sold-out crowd in what has become a much-loved local tradition.
